Beschreibung: ESPANYA AL DIA [SPAIN TODAY], the Laya Films and Film Popular newsreel produced during the Spanish Civil War made up of the following reports: 1. SECTOR OF ARGANDA. GERMAN TANKS CAPTURED FROM THE ENEMY Republican soldiers inspect a number of German tanks captured from Franco's army in the Battle of Jarama. Images of the tank identification plates and the damage done during combat. German militiamen from the International Brigade take possession of the tanks and drive them towards the rearguard. 2. ARAGON FRONT. EVERYTHING IS READY - AWAITING THE ORDER TO ATTACK Image of a sign which reads, 'Huesca, 3 km. Zaragoza 74 km'. A view showing Huesca in the distance. Soldiers are seen walking the trenches with rifles. Shots of a group of soldiers peeling potatoes. The narrator points out that they are three kilometres from Huesca and that they have consolidated their positions and are ready for the offensive. 3. VALENCIA. ITALIAN PRISONERS The Italians taken prisoner in the Battle of Guadalajara are shown engaged in a variety of activities in a square in Valencia. Images of the prisoners marching in columns by twos. One group reads the 'Il Grido del Popolo' newspaper. Close-ups of prisoners. The narrator explains the development of the Popular Army from a group of volunteer militiamen to a regular army. 4. BARCELONA. THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE VISITS THE POPULAR SCHOOL OF WAR Minister of Justice, Juan García Oliver visits the Popular School of War. Images show recruits, future Republican Army officers, marching and training in the barrack courtyard. 5. VALENCIA. REVIEW OF THE 3RD BATTALION OF SAPPERS Parade and inspection of the battalion of Sappers in the courtyard of a barracks in Valencia attended by military officials. The narrator notes that these troops are prepared to join the fight in Arganda and Guadalajara. 6. BARCELONA. AMERICAN HELP FOR THE SPANISH PEOPLE Images of four ambulances parked in front of the headquarters of the Propaganda Commission. These ambulances were donated by American left-wing organisations (Benjamin Franklin corps, American Friends of Spanish Democracy and American International Labour). A group of military doctors and nurses are seen standing in front of the ambulances. The narrator points out that the American people are demonstrating their solidarity with Spanish democracy. 7. BARCELONA. CONTROL OF THE ROADS Images showing the activities of the Transport Ministry's motor police patrol in controlling the roads. The motorcycle unit are seen riding down Avinguda Diagonal. A policeman from the unit flags down a motorist to check the driver's documentation. Another patrol is seen being told about an accident by the driver of a Government of Catalonia vehicle. They go to assist the motorist: They help the driver and pick up his personal effects scattered on the ground. 8. SOUTH OF THE EBRO, HARVESTING OF BEETROOTS Groups of field workers make their way to the beetroot fields. As they harvest the beetroot, the men are shown digging and the women cutting the leaves. Images of huge piles of beetroot bulbs being loaded onto carts. The carts are then shown transporting the harvest to the factory. 9. IN THE STUDIO OF THE SCULPTOR VICTOR MACHO Sculptor Victorio Macho is seen in his studio contemplating the statue he was commissioned to create of Partit Comunista Espanyol (PCE) party leader and government representative, Dolores Ibarruri, 'La Pasionaria'. Close-ups of the sculpture highlight the details. 10. PARIS. SPAIN AT THE 1937 EXHIBITION Inauguration of the Spanish Pavilion for the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1937. Images of speeches made by the Republican's ambassador in France, Luís Araquistain, a French representative of the organisation and the pavilion commissioner, Jose Gaos, with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Laying the first stone: Luis Araquistain dips the trowel into a bucket of cement while the crowd claps.
